Issues : Long accents

Accents in A, interpretation

Accent in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In A the first long note of the theme, g1, is provided with an accent in both bar 1 and 9 (as well as in bar 41). In FE (→GE,EE) the sign appears only in bar 9, which we consider as an oversight. The accent's type in bar 1 is ambiguous, yet the sign in bar 9 is undoubtedly a long accent and this is the version we adopt in the main text in both places.

b. 3

 in A (→FEGE,EE)

Our suggestion

..

The sign at the beginning of bar 3 in A (→FEGE,EE) may be considered as  hairpins, especially due to the fact that it is between the staves. However, a comparison with analogous bars 11 and 43 shows that we are probably dealing with an unfortunately placed long accent mark and this is the interpretation we suggest in the main text.

b. 5-13

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

 twice in A

 once in FE (→GE) & EE3 (→EE4)

Our variant suggestion

..

In bars 5 and 13 it is not certain whether the difference between the indications (accents,  hairpins) of A and FE (→GE,EE) is a result of the engraver's inaccuracy or Chopin's intervention. In the main text we propose coherent indications of A

b. 6-7

composition: Op. 10 No 6, Etude in E♭ minor

Long accents in A

Different accents in FE & EE3 (→EE4)

One accent in EE2

Short accents in GE

..

Two long accents visible in A were reproduced in FE (→EE; in EE2 the accent in bar 7 was overlooked) in varied ways. GE includes short accents in both bars. There is no reason to assume that Chopin interfered with any of the versions.

Our interpretation of accents in A

..

The accent in bar 10 in A is shorter than a few previous ones and the one in bar 11; however, it seems to be an inaccurate notation. In the editions the sign in bar 11 was omitted.
