b. 16

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

No pedalling in A

 in FE (→GE1,EE2)

  in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) & EE3 (→EE4)

Our suggestion

..

The  sign was added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE. In this edition (→GE1,EE2) there is however no , which same as in the other places (e.g., in bars 10-11 and 13) is probably an oversight. In the main text we suggest to complete the  mark by analogy with bar 8, yet also a longer pedal hold seems to be totally possible, as it was marked in later GE,s and EE,s.

Dot in GE

..

The staccato dot under A is most probably an addition of the reviser of GE.

Wedge in A (→FEEE)

Wedge & dot in GE1

Two dots in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

..

In the main text we give the wedge written over the 1st quaver in A (→FEGE1,EE). From GE2 on, the sign was changed into a dot. In all GE,s a dot over the chord on the 2nd quaver was also added.

b. 24-27

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

No pedalling in A

Pedalling in FE

GE3 (→GE4GE5)

Our suggestion

..

The pedalling added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE is inaccurately written, probably due to the lack of space in tightly packed text on the page. It resulted in different attempts of interpretation by the engravers of GE and EE. In the main text we interpret the pedalling of FE as the natural harmonic pedalling, in accordance with the one which was undeniably marked in bars 29-30.

Slurs in A

FE (→EE, →GE1GE2)

GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

In A the slurs running from the beginning of these bars reach g3, which we give in the main text. In FE (→EE,GE1GE2) the slurs are shorter, which, according to us, is a result of the engraver's inaccuracy. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) the slur in bar 25 was extended.
