b. 16

No pedalling in A

 in FE (→GE1,EE2)

Our suggestion

..

The  sign was added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE. In this edition (→GE1,EE2) there is however no , which same as in the other places (e.g., in bars 10-11 and 13) is probably an oversight. In the main text we suggest to complete the  mark by analogy with bar 8, yet also a longer pedal hold seems to be totally possible, as it was marked in later GE,s and EE,s.

Fingering in A

FE (→GE)

..

We give the fingering digits in bars 17-18 and 21-22 after A. In FE (→GE) the '1' digits were omitted at the end of bars 18 and 22, which we consider as a result of distraction. In EE Fontana added 9 digits, precising the fingering stemming from Chopin's hints and analogies.

Slurs & wedge in A, interpretation

Slurs in FE

Slurs in GE & EE

Our alternative suggestion

..

In the main text we give the articulation (slurs, without staccato sign) in the 1st half of the bar on the basis of FE, which was probably proofread by Chopin. The reason why the earlier start of the slur (from the 1st note) introduced in this edition was reproduced neither in GE nor in EE remains a mystery. An alternative suggestion with a shortened slur in the 2nd half of bar 23 refers to analogous slurs of FE in bars 24-25.

b. 24-26

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

in A

in FE (→EE) (interpretation) & in GE

..

The difference in placing the poco a poco cresc. indication between A and FE (→GE,EE) is, according to us, too significant to consider it only as a result of the engraver's inaccuracy. Due to this fact, considering the hint of FE as the expression of Chopin's latest intention, we give it in the main text. However, the version of A may certainly be considered as equal. The patent error in form of lack of the conjunction 'a' in FE (→EE) was corrected in GE

Slurs in A

FE (→EE, →GE1GE2)

GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

In A the slurs running from the beginning of these bars reach g3, which we give in the main text. In FE (→EE,GE1GE2) the slurs are shorter, which, according to us, is a result of the engraver's inaccuracy. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) the slur in bar 25 was extended.
