The question from which note Chopin wanted to begin the slur is unclear. It is symmetrical with respect to the pair of d2 and e2 notes, which suggests that it is supposed to concern only them (the slur in bar 80, which undoubtedly starts from the 1st note, is written with similar flourish in A). On the other hand, the left ending of the slur in bar 78 falls closest to the f1-a1 third, performed at the beginning of the bar. It may be considered as a hint that it is the interpretation of the engraver of FE (→GE,EE) that it is the correct one. Such interpretation is confirmed by the slur in the R.H. in bar 71, which is meaningful only when it starts from the f2 minim.
