Issues : Errors in GE

b. 1-11

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No pedalling in CLI

Pedalling in FE (→GE1GE2, →EE

Pedalling in GE3 (→GE4GE5

..

In the main text we give the undoubtedly authentic pedalling of FE (→GE1GE2,→EE). In later GE the indications were omitted – presumably by mistake – in bars 9-10.

b. 8

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No mark in CLI & GE4 (→GE5)

Long accent in FE

Short accent in GE1 (→GE2GE3) & EE

..

The accent sign in FE is clearly different than in bars 1-2. Most probably, according to Chopin's intentions, it was supposed to be a long accent. Both in GE and in EE it was rendered as a casual short accent. In GE4 (→GE5) the sign was omitted, which was probably a mistake.

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No pedalling in CLI

Pedalling in FE (→GE,EE)

..

In the main text we give the undoubtedly authentic pedalling of FE (→GE,EE). (In GE3 the  sign was mistakenly omitted in bars 29 and 31, while in EE2 in bar 34; the mistakes were corrected in the subsequent editions or impressions).

in GE is a mistake (it was corrected only in GE5) drawn from the review copy of FE, which is proved by the visible traces of the note's deletion in FE.

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

Rests in CLI & GE (except GE3)

No rests in FE (→EE2EE3)

Rests in GE3 & EE4

Our variant suggestion

..

The sources differ when it comes to the notation of rests at the end of these bars. The natural notation of CLI, in which the part of the R.H. ends with a rest, however, was not repeated in FE (→EE2EE3). As it is not certain whether omitting the rests was done on purpose by Chopin, in the main text we propose rests in brackets as a variant solution. After all, the difference has a rather ideological than practical character. In the remaining editions the rests are present, which is most probably a result of revisers' actions. In EE4 and GE3 both rests are in bar 45, which is most probably a mistake.
