Apart from the fingering of FE (→GE,EE) given in the main text, which certainly comes from Chopin, Fontana proposed an additional, alternative solution in EE.

The fingering in bars 38-45 and 47-49, originating from FE (→GE,EE) and adopted to the main text, is certainly authentic. In EE Fontana added to it 29 digits in bars 42, 44, 46 and 50; the additions do not change the fingering stemming from Chopin's indications. At the beginning of bar 42 an arbitrary completion of the fingering's digits was performed also in GE4 (→GE5).

Our suggestion

..

In the main text in bars 38-46 and 49-50 we give the pedalling based on the undoubtedly authentic pedalling of FE (→GE,EE). At the same time we correct a few clear defects, particularly:

  • we complete the  signs omitted in FE in bars 40 and 46;
  • we add the pedalling in the 2nd half of bar 42 omitted in FE (→GE,EE);
  • in FE we move the inaccurately put  sign in bar 43 and the  sign in bar 44.

The omissions and inaccuracies in bars 40, 43-44 and 46 were already corrected in GE and EE.

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No marks in CLI & EE2 (→EE3)

Long accents in FE (→GE1)

Short accents in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) & EE4

..

The accents in bars 38 and 40 in FE (→GE1) have a form suggesting the use of long accents by Chopin. In EE2 (→EE3) the signs were omitted. In the remaining editions common short accents were given.

The stem of the 2nd minim in the L.H. in FE reaches only the upper note, G, which results in the fact that the lower one, G1, seems as if it was a semibreve. In GE and EE the error was corrected.
