In the main text we give the title and dedication in the undoubtedly authentic version adopted in FE. The extensions of both the title (in GE and EE) and dedication (in EE) most probably come from the editors. See the Etude in C major, No. 1, bar 1.

Fingering in FE (→GE)

..

Three digits defining the fingering of the first passages of the Etude (based on one finger arrangement) were added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). In EE, Fontana added to them a number of next ones, developing the composer's hints, specifying, e.g., the places of crossing under of the 1st finger.

We suggest to complete the slurs after Chopin's marks in analogous bars 16 and 20. In bar 6 the slur was already added in GE and EE4.

Fingering in A

FE (→GE)

..

In the main text we give the fingering of the L.H., written by Chopin in A. In FE (→GE) the '3' digit was overlooked in bar 5, which is almost certainly an oversight. In EE Fontana completed the fingering at the beginning of bar 5, adding digits for each note. EE3 erroneously features '2' as the 1st digit in bar 4 (it may be a mistake related to the transcription of the "continental" fingering system to the "British" one – cf. General Editorial Principlesp. 10).

Fingering in A

FE (→GE)

..

Two digits written in A in bar 4 are generally enough to decipher Chopin's fingering in bars 1-8. While proofreading FE (→GE,EE), Chopin completed the hints so that each of the finger arrangements used in these bars included the written out precise fingering at least once. We give this fingering in the main text. In EE, Fontana additionally expanded the indications drawn from FE
