Issues : Long accents

Long accents in A & EE

Short accents in FE (→GE)

..

The long accents, written in A in bars 47 and 49, were reproduced in FE (→GE) as short. It is certainly a result of misunderstanding of Chopin's notation. However, it is difficult to determine what made the engraver or reviser of EE use marks resembling long accents, contrary to the base text.

b. 74

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Long accents in A

Accent in FE (→GE)

Long accent in EE

..

In the main text we give two unambiguous long accents of A. Nevertheless, none of them was reproduced in FE (→GE,EE), in which there is however an accent in the middle of the bar (perhaps long, as it was reproduced in EE). The mark could have been added by Chopin, yet one cannot be certain whether it was correctly reproduced. Cf. the note on slurs.

Accent on d1 in A

Accent on c1 in FE (→GE,EE)

..

According to us, the accent over c1 featured in FE (→GE,EE) is a result of the engraver's error (who perhaps was influenced by the accents in bars 79-80). In the main text we give the long accent written in A, emphasising the appoggiatura of d1
