In A the last quaver is the F-c fifth, yet the bottom note in FE1 is a G. This patent error was corrected in all remaining editions.

No fingering in A

Fingering '4' in FE (→GE)

Fingering in EE

..

Chopin added the digit '4' at the beginning of bar 61 in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). In the latter, Fontana completed the indications concerning the fingering in accordance with Chopin's previous hints. In bar 62 two mistakes were committed – over there is the digit '4' determining the 5th finger, then the 1st finger was indicated for a1.

Slur in A, possible interpretation

Contextual interpretation of A (→FEGE,EE3)

Slurs in EE4

Our suggestion

..

Lack of slurs in bars 61-62 is undoubtedly Chopin's oversight in A, related to the transition to a new page – the slurs begin from a new page and the first of them (in bar 63) suggests continuation from the previous bar. In bars 62-63 FE (→GE,EE3) have a slur resulting from the notation of A. In the main text we consider the slur in bars 62-63 and suggest to add the slur in bar 61, in accordance with the slurring of analogous bars.

Slur in EE

Our suggestion

..

Less precise notation of the last appearance of the main theme of the Etude is revealed by, e.g., lack of some of the slurs in the part of the L.H. We suggest to complete them after bars 15-22, which are most accurately written in this respect. Some of the suggested additions were already introduced – probably on the basis of comparison with analogous places – in EE (in bar 64) and GE2 (→GE3GE4) – in bar 66.

Semibreve in A & GE

Minim in FE (→EE3)

Minim in EE4

..

The version of FE (→EE3) is probably a result of misunderstanding of the notation of A. The later change of notation into two-part writing is an arbitrary invention of the reviser of EE4, which is of no significance in this context (cf. bar 31).
