Slurs

b. 47-48

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Slurs in A, contextual interpretation

Slur in FE (→GE,EE)

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

The double slur, as written in A, was more than once used by Chopin. However, in the main text we give a single slur found in FE (→GE,EE), possibly introduced by Chopin while proofreading FE, as in bars 49-50. In bar 48 A has two unclear slurs, probably the result of some corrections with a not fully controled result.

b. 49-50

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Possible slur in A

Slur in FE (→GE,EE)

Slurs suggested by the editors

..

It is not clear whether a slightly oblique line in A going from the last crotchet of bar 49 to the second beat of bar 50 is a slur, nor what the extent of that possible slur should be. In the main text we give the slur from FE (→GE,EE) and suggest adding another one modeled on the sign written in A in the analogous bar 48.

b. 51

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No slur in A (→FEGE1,EE)

Slur in GE2 (→GE3GE4)

Our suggestion

..

Lack of the slur in this place is almost certainly a result of Chopin's inaccuracy. The mark was added in GE2 (→GE3GE4).

b. 55-56

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No slurs in A

Slurs in FE (→GE1)

GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

The slurring in the L.H. in bar 55 was added by Chopin during a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). Lack of relevant addition in bar 56 in FE (→GE1) must be considered as the composer's oversight. The slurs modeled on the slurs in the R.H. were added in GE2 (→GE3GE4), while EE repeats the slurring of the previous bar (see also the note to bar 56). In the main text we suggest the first solution, as undoubtedly more accurate – cf. bar 54.

b. 56

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

Two slurs in A (→FEGE)

Four slurs in EE

..

The slurs of EE are probably the engraver's error resulting from different division of the text into great staves. The erroneous slurs were repeated also in the part of the L.H.
