Interpretation of A (→FEEE) suggested by the editors

..

In A (→FEEE) the  raising f to f is placed only in the 2nd group of semiquavers. The tonality of D major, consolidated in the previous bars, does not leave any doubt that lack of  before the 2nd note in the bar is another sign Chopin overlooked, due to obviousness of the situation. Writing a  before the 6th semiquaver was probably related to the impression of harmonic change – from the 2nd group in bar 43 to the 1st group in bar 44, the key of F minor transitionally prevails. The sign in the 2nd group confused the reviser of GE, who, believing that it was that was supposed to be in the 1st group, added a cautionary  before the 2nd semiquaver. Chopin would often place an accidental too late, e.g., in bar 42, as well as in other pieces, e.g., Etude in A, No. 10, bar 37, Sonata in B minor, Op. 35, 4th mov., bar 51, the Mazurka in A minor, Dbop. 42B, bar 61, the Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, 1st mov., bar 100, 2nd mov., bar 75.

b. 51

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

c3 without  in A (→FE), and with   in EE & GE3 (→GE4)

c3 in GE1 (→GE2)

..

In A (→FE) there is no accidental before the 4th semiquaver. There is no reason to doubt that it is a typical of Chopin inaccuracy, resulting from the rules of validity of the accidentals, which in fact were not fully established in Chopin's notation. It is confirmed by the  written in this place in FED. In spite of this, in GE1 (→GE2) there is a  before this note, which is certainly a mistake.

Chopin added the fingering digit '1' in FED. The digit is also among the fingering added by Fontana in EE.

b. 80-81

composition: Op. 10 No 8, Etude in F major

No fingering in A

Fingering in FE (→GE)

Fingering written in FES

..

The fingering added in FE (→GE) in bar 81 – probably by Chopin – despite being totally correct from the pianistic point of view, is, however, contrary to Chopin's fingering of similar figures in bars 26, 77 and particularly 83. Due to this fact, in the main text we give the fingering added in pencil in FES. The fingering of FE was also not included by Fontana in EE, who proposed a solution modeled on Chopin's hints in similar bars, hence compatible with the annotations in FES

Fingering in FE (→GE)

EE, FED & FES

..

The fingering digit added over the 5th semiquaver ('1') in a proofreading of FE (→GE) is erroneous, which is revealed by comparison with analogous figures in bars 81 and 83. The conclusion is confirmed by corrections in FED and FES written with pencil. The correct digit '2' is also in EE.
