b. 3

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

R.H. in JC

..

The version of JC and EF, with a clearly audible doubled leading note B-b on the 5th quaver of the bar, is undoubtedly earlier. It is difficult to determine how the difference concerning sustaining the note at the transition between bars 3 and 4 was developed. In PE, the lower note of the last semiquaver was printed on the level of c1, which is certainly a mistake corrected by us into d1.

b. 12

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

..

Versions of JC and EF differ only in the presence or lack of the slur and the tie. In the main text we adopt the later melodically enhanced version of PE. The internal division of the tie is probably an arbitrary decision of the editor, as Chopin would never use such a notation.

Crotchet in JC & EF

Quaver & semiquaver in PE

..

The version of JC and EF is undoubtedly earlier. Not only is the version of PE melodically enriched, but also marked more precisely from the performance point of view (the slur and dynamic hairpins).

Rhythm in JC & EF

Rhythm in PE

..

Both forms of the rhythm are undoubtedly authentic and both are justified by certain stylistic arguments. In the main text we give the probably later version of PE.
