Pedalling

b. 64-65

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

No markings in JC & PE

Pedalling in EF

..

The pedalling of EF, although compatible with typical ploys of the Chopin pedalling, is probably non-authentic.

b. 66

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

Pedalling in EF

..

The pedalling of EF is certainly possible to apply, yet the indications themselves are most probably non-authentic.

b. 70-71

composition: WN 17, Polonaise in B♭ major

Pedalling in EF & PE

..

We give the undoubtedly authentic pedalling of PE. In this case, the indications of EF, probably added by Fontana, entirely match Chopin's indications.

Our suggestion

..

Lack of pedalling markings in bar 75 must be considered as an inaccuracy of notation – cf. analogous bar 71. Therefore, in the main text we propose to complete it. Such pedalling is also featured in EF.

Pedalling in PE

..

In the main text we give the pedalling of PE, which reveals all possible authentic features – the fact that the pedalling is indicated only in bar 78 may be related to the presence of the bass note in a lower register (E). The conventional, combined only with harmonic changes, pedalling of EF is probably an addition by Fontana. Cf. bars 80-81.
