Three  in FEF

One  in GEF

The combination of  and an accent was willingly used by Chopin. However, in the described bars its authenticity is questioned by:

  • differences between FEF and GEF – both editions include  only in bar 26; in bars 28 and 30 the sign is present only in FEF; it could be explained by the fact that Fontana added  only in the latest proofing of FEF;
  • differences between the main part of the Polonaise and its repetition Da Capo written out in notes –  in FEF in bars 28 and 30 and lack of the sign in bars 28(r) and 30(r);
  • graphic separation of the combination's elements, i.e.  and the accent.
