b. 445

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

In EE and GC (→GE) there is before d2, which seems redundant. In FE the accidental was rather erroneously placed before f2. category imprint: Source & stylistic information issues: Errors in FE , Cautionary accidentals , Last key signature sign |

EE is most probably original. We cannot completely rule out chance omission of the chord elements written out on the bottom stave (a-h second is notated in the same way in the remaining sources). In the main text we omit the redundant cautionary before d3 as it had no practical application. category imprint: Differences between sources |

b. 470-472

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

In FE no naturals lowering d3 to d3 in b. 470 or d2 to d2 in b. 472 must be seen as errors, which is further confirmed by their lack in GC, despite the fact that Chopin personally filled them in. Naturals in EE may have been added based on the previous three corresponding occurrences of this phrase (bars 176, 220 and 308). Sharps in bars 445, 447, 466 also show that Chopin was not sure over a longer phrase if (d) belonged to the key signature. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: EE revisions , Omission of current key accidentals , Last key signature sign , Authentic corrections in GC |

b. 505-509

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Disregarding the first chord, in EE there is no lowering all d to d in different octaves. This was the exact copyist's notation of GC, however Chopin added five out of thirteen nevessary accidentals. The notation of FE and GE is completely correct. category imprint: issues: Errors in EE , GE revisions , Omission of current key accidentals , Last key signature sign , Inaccuracies in GC , Authentic corrections in GC |
