Issues : No pedal release mark
b. 42

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor
..
The asterisk mark can only be found in EE. We give it in our main text despite the fact that editorial revision cannot entirely be ruled out here. In practice, the pedal can be depressed a little longer, until the sustained notes c and c2 resound completely. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: No pedal release mark |

b. 383-384

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Only in EE there is a pedal up mark at the end of b. 384, this may have been an editorial revision. In FE there are no pedal markings in these bars, which may have been the engraver's omission as there is in a corresponding bar t. 41. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: No pedal release mark |

The mark must be authentic, it is not certain however, if it was not Chopin's intention to move it 4 bars further. Therefore, we propose our variant solution, bracketing the mark. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , No pedal release mark |

b. 632-634
|
composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor
..
None of the sources provides correct pedalling in these bars. No in EE (b. 632) and FE (b. 634) may only slightly mislead the performer as in both sources the moment of releasing (changing) pedals is marked with (accordingly in bars 633 and 635). In GC (→GE) there is no pedalling until the end of the piece, which most certainly can be classified as the copyist's omission (in two last lines of the text 259-266 i 548-553). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , No pedal release mark , Errors of GC |
