Issues : Errors of GC
b. 259-265

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor
..
The absence of pedal marks in GC (→GE) is most probably the copyist's error (see also note to bar 266). The pedalling of EE is probably authentic (cf. a similar solution in bars 268-271, confirmed both by EE and by GC). In FE, the placement of the in bar 259 seems doubtful and we consider it to be an inaccuracy almost certainly resulting from faulty understanding of the hand-written base text , as well as the lack of space around the note D1 (cf. bar 267). In our main text we suggest two, most probably authentic, versions of pedalling (EE and FE modified in bar 259 ) as variants. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in FE , Errors of GC |

GC (→GE) has no pedal marks in this bar. This is almost certainly the mistake of the copyist (see also notes to bars 260-265 and 265-266). category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors of GC |

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

The GC (→GE1) version, although harmonically and pianistically quite possible, is probably erroneous. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Terzverschreibung error , Errors of GC |

b. 283-287
|
composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

In GC, the slur ends in bar 283 at the end of the page. The fact that it is not continued on the next page is probably an oversight. We adopt the consistent version of EE and FE. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors of GC |
