Both forms of notation of the 1st beat – two-part and one-part – are probably authentic. GE2 has rests added for the upper part, which is the editor's arbitrary addition and an unnecessary complication. GC has the third a2-c sharp3 in the upper voice. The fact that EE and FE consistently have a different version testifies to Gutmann's error, quite often to be found in his copies (cf. bar 100). On the basis of extant sources it is difficult to determine whether Chopin wanted to have long or short accents here. In GC, the accents are quite large, yet clearly shorter than those appearing earlier, in bars 92-96 and 99-102. Moving the accents between the staves in GE makes us think that also in EE the accent placement does not necessarily match the notation of the manuscript that served as the base text for it.
