Slurs in GC

..

The slurs in GC are written in a careless manner, so the exact moment when the first of them ends (on the 1st or the 2nd beat of the bar) and the other one begins (on the 2nd or the 3rd beat) is not clear. The slur in GE is not divided at all, perhaps due to that ambiguous notation. Our interpretation of  GC takes into account the copyist’s evident tendency to draw slurs vigorously, making them longer rather than shorter. In our main text we do not end the slur in bar 97, following EE and FE in that respect.

..

The lower note of the last octave in the L.H. is written too low in GC, looking almost like F sharp.

e1 in EE, GC & FE

d1 in GE

The minim in the highest voice is not very legible in  GC (it was probably corrected from d sharp1 to e1), so in GE it was misread as d sharp1 .

For our main text we adopt the version of GC. That version was also reproduced in GE, albeit inaccurately (the slur in bar 135) and it was additionally revised in GE2 (dots in the L.H. in bars 129-130). The notation of EE may also be considered a less accurate rendition of that version. The long slur of FE was added in print, probably at Chopin's request, and replaced a shorter one beginning from bar 134, which was definitely erroneous. That version should be therefore considered an alternative authentic approach to phrasing and articulation markings for that fragment.

Slur in EE and FE

..

Bar 139 is not embraced with any slur in GC: the slur from the preceding bars reaches only to the end of bar 138 (the last bar on the manuscript page) and a new slur begins as far as bar 140. We think that, since the slur in bar 138 indicates continuation, one should assume that it was supposed to reach the minim in bar 139. GE has got a different reading of those slurs; one of them ends in bar 138 and another one begins in bar 139. In EE and FE the slur is not divided, which is probably another authentic version of the slurring, alternative to the version of GC.
