Issues : Inaccuracies in GC
b. 620

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

The GC slur extends over to the rest on the second beat of the bar. This was characteristic of a freestyle writing of slurs by Gutmann (and also quite often by Chopin). category imprint: Source & stylistic information issues: Inaccuracies in GC |

The slur in EE erroneously begins only in b. 624. We may suspect that the omission of the slur's beginning until the end of the line mast have occured already in the manuscript for the edition. Also the GC slur may well be inaccurate, so we assume based on GE that the slur is too long and should apply to where the RH comes in. For the main text we adopt the FE slur which seems to be musically most natural. category imprint: Differences between sources issues: Errors in EE , Inaccuracies in GC |

The stretto indication was most precisely written out in GC, where we know exactly the scope of the notated dashes. Neither EE nor GE shows it with scu precision. In FE there is no indication at all. However, we believe that the scope indicated in GC was not really based on Chopin's intention as it would be virtually impossible to perform crotchets in bars 643-644. Therefore, assuming the notation of GC is imprecise, we suggest limiting the scope of stretto only to bars 637-642. category imprint: Interpretations within context; Differences between sources issues: Inaccuracies in GC |
