b. 59-60

The slur of A (→GEFEEE) read literally

The slur in A evidently begins in bar 59. Still, it is easy to find in A a number of slurs that very widely embrace a phrase or a motif that they apply to: we may list here the slurs beginning in bars 39, 41, 45, 47, 49, 50, not to mention the one in bars 75-76 of the Mazurka in C Op. 24 no. 2. If we take that aspect of Chopin's notation of A into consideration, the composer's intention is no longer that obvious and the slur embracing only the motif in bar 60, analogous to the three preceding ones, seems a real alternative for the version of GE (→FEEE).

There is no doubt that the discussed slur and the slur in the 2nd volta of that bar should be the same. Unfortunately, on the second occasion the situation is not clear either, as in A Chopin wrote no slur at all, and the slur added in GE allows for various interpretations.

In this situation we consider it admissible to take either one of the slurring options into account.
