b. 22-28

Chopin's intentions connected with the placement of asterisk marks in bars 21-36 are not easy to figure out; this is best illustrated by the manner in which the notation of A was understood in GE1 (all asterisks under the 3rd crotchet) and then in GE2 (all of them after the 3rd crotchet; bar 24 probably contains a mistake). In our opinion, the latter interpretation is the only correct one:

  • all the asterisks  may be treated as written in relation to bar lines (at the end of the bar), and only some  – mainly in bar 21, possibly also in bars 22, 29-31 – as synchronized with the 3rd crotchet;
  • the marks are written hastily, with no care for precision, which precludes the possibility that Chopin wanted to use different pedalling in those bars (only bar 21 may give rise to justified doubt).
