b. 228

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

d2 & d2 in sources

d2 & d2 suggested by the editors

..

The version of the sources, in which both the second and the last quaver feature d2 (without any accidental), is almost certainly due to Chopin's oversight, who, after writing a  lowering d2 to d2 at the end of the preceding bar, did not notice that he should have repeated it only just 2 quavers farther on. This assumption is confirmed by an analogous sequence in bar 68, which includes a respective . Taking into account the above, in the main text we add a  in the discussed place, as well as a , necessary in this case, restoring d2 at the end of the bar.

In A there is no  restoring f2 on the last quaver. Chopin's patent oversight was corrected in GE (→FE,EE,IE).

g-d1-f1 in A

g-f1 in GE (→FE,EE,IE)

In A the d1 notehead in the 2nd L.H. quaver does not align with g and f1 (vertically) and is not adjacent to this quaver's stem. Perhaps this is why it is absent in GE (→FE,EE,IE). The regular nature of this chordal sequence makes a very strong case for the presence of this note (cf. also bars 71-72).

b. 229-230

composition: (Op. 4), Sonata in C minor, Mvt I

..

In each of these bars in the main text we add a cautionary  to the bottom note of the 3rd L.H. quaver (b and b1) and to the top note of the 7th R.H. quaver (b2 and b3). The R.H. accidentals were also added by GE (→FE,EE,IE).

In A Chopin forgot to write a  to the last R.H. quaver, raising b2 to b2. The patent mistake – cf. the next bar, featuring a respective  – was rectified already in GE (→FE,EE,IE).
