When interpreted literally, the A dynamic markings seem contradictory or ambiguous. If concerns the d1-d2 crotchet under which it was written, is pointless. On the other hand, if we were to relate to the L.H. minim, which is not clearly apparent from the A notation, but neither is it contrary to it, and could refer to the R.H. part and the L.H. part, respectively, e.g. as follows:
In this situation, we consider the latter interpretation of and to be the A text.
The difference in the size of the discussed markings in A – is clearly smaller than the remaining two – points to a yet another interpretation. It is likely that , probably written first, was supposed to be replaced by and , yet it remained unremoved due to Chopin's distraction. According to us, this is the most likely interpretation, resulting in a musically natural solution, compliant with the markings adopted by GE (→FE,EE,IE). We provide this version in the main text.
