b. 294
This is the second – after stretto in the sequence of minim chords preparing the entrance of this theme (bar 290) – out of the several differences between A and FE concerning performance markings. In the majority of these situations the A notation is more detailed; however, there are also situations pointing to a different performance concept of this theme:
- in the FE version (→EE1) the nature of the theme is almost the same as the first time (bars 127-142) – lively but steady, marching rhythm, long phrases, without particularly distinct accents. The increased energetic load is evidenced only by dynamics – not , but .
- In the A version the increase in dynamics is marked more suggestively from the very beginning (sempre forte), while in the 2nd eight-bar section the sound expands even more (cresc. in bars 302-309), until reaching in bar 110. There are also changes in the tempo – the marching group starts moving faster (bar 294) and later on even faster, with eager anticipation (bars 306-309). The articulation of the phrases is more distinct thanks to shorter slurs (bar 294, 296 and 304) and accented syncopated notes (5 additional accents in bar 296, 299, 301 and 304).
