b. 9-10

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

d tied in FC (→GE)

d repeated in FE (→EE)

..

The missing tie to the d minim is probably an oversight by the engraver of FE (→EE). Cf. a different kind of mistake in bars 17-20.

b. 17-20

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

..

In FE there is a slur combining the rest on the 3rd beat of bar 19 with the f minim in bar 20. This absurd mark was probably supposed to be in bars 17-18 as a tie to f, which is present in FC (→GE). In EE there is no L.H. slur/tie in bars 17-20. When this phrase is repeated in bars 113-116, the text of FE (→EE) is correct.

Notation in FC

FE (→EE)

..

Crotchets at the beginning of the bar probably resulted from a correction in print, most probably from the FC version. The latter is, however, misleading – one can get the impression that the bar includes 5 crotchets. The two-part writing specifying the rhythm was introduced in GE. The simplified rhythmic notation is accompanied in FE with the pedalling (see the note below), which, consequently, produces a very similar sound effect to the FC version. It proves that Chopin either changed the rhythm notation himself or accepted it through the addition of pedalling. Due to the above, we provide this version in the main text, simpler in terms of notation and more pianistically natural.

Quaver & quaver rest in FC (contextual interpretation→GE1) & FE (→EE)

Dotted quaver & semiquaver rest in GE2

..

In FC the last L.H. f1 note is a dotted quaver, as a result of which the bar includes one semiquaver too many. The mistake was corrected in GE1 to a version that is also in FE (→EE); therefore, we give it in the main text. The GE2 version is an alternative revision of the erroneous FC notation, not devoid of logic with respect to the R.H. rhythm, but almost certainly inauthentic.

b. 53-54

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

g1 tied in b. 52-53 in FC (→GE)

g1 tied in b. 52-54 in FE (→EE)

..

The missing tie to g1 to bar 54 in FC (→GE) is almost certainly Fontana's mistake.
