Issues : Changes of metre

composition: Op. 29, Impromptu in A♭ major

..

The  time signature is most probably an error or FE's and GE's revision. Changes of time signature indication of that kind are to be found on a number of occasions also in other Chopin's pieces issued by those publishing houses – cf. e.g. Etude in C, Op. 10 No. 1, bar 1..

..

We give the time signature's indication after CLI. Although FE (→GE,EE) has a , it is difficult to assume that the change of time signature was intentional, as in FE the indication  does not appear in any of the Etudes (contrary to the manuscripts), cf. the Etude in C minor, No. 4, F major, No. 8 and C minor, No. 12. This phenomenon is also present in other pieces, even in the most obvious cases, e.g., in the Etudes in F minor, Op. 25 No. 2, D major, Op. 25 No. 8 or F minor, Dbop. 36 No. 1.

in FE (→GE1GE2, →EE)

in GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

In the main text we give the tempo indications added by Chopin in subsequent proofs of FE (→GE1GE2, →EE): Allegro already in FEcor, metronome tempo in the next one. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) the metronome marking erroneously displays 114.
Different indications written in Ap may not have a universal value, as the Etude in this autograph differs quite significantly from the published version in terms of pianistics.

b. 1

composition: Op. 10 No 5, Etude in G♭ major

..

In A there are visible traces of the time signature's change: from  to 2/4. This may mean that there was a working notation of the Etude in two-time longer rhythmic values (cf. bars 4-12 and 8).

b. 1

composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

in AW, GC (→GE) & EE3

in CDP, FE & EE1 (→EE2)

..

The use of  time signature is surprising only in CDP and EE, as in FE the  indication in the Etudes – contrary to the manuscripts – was not used at all, neither in Op. 25 nor in Op. 10 and the Etude in F minor, Dbop. 36 No. 1 (see also the Impromptu in A major, Op. 29). In any case, the correctness and authenticity of the  time signature leaves no doubts – a two-beat bar is written in two autographs (AT and AW) and in GC, based on an autograph.
The revision of EE3 could have been performed after having compared it with one of GE.

AT has a 2/4 time signature, which is a part of the original rhythmic notation of the Etude, discussed in the adjacent note.
