Slur from 1st note of bar in A & GE2

Slur from quavers in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

The later start of the slur could have been introduced by Chopin in the proofreading of GE1 (→FEEE) – cf. other motifs of this theme with identical rhythm, e.g. in bars 3 and 25. However, in the main text we start the slur from the 1st note of the bar, in accordance with A, since the authenticity of the version of GE1 is uncertain.

Our alternative suggestion

..

The slur written in A stayed in GE (→FEEE) next to note heads, which perhaps may have induced Chopin to add a second slur, embracing also the preceding crotchet. According to us, the slur was probably supposed to replace the previous one. A probability of Chopin's proofreading is also indicated by a possible trace of correcting the previous slur in bar 12. However, not being certain of the authorship of these changes, in the main text we leave the version of A.

b. 16-17

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur from bar 17 in A

Slur from bar 16 in GE (→FEEE)

..

In A, starting the slur from bar 17 is most probably an inaccuracy, being a result of the transition to a new page. It was corrected in GE (→FEEE); the traces of correction in print are clearly visible. At the same time, one can see that the slur in GE1 originally encompassed bars 17-19, which was changed to a slurring that was not only compliant with A, but also correcting the inaccuracy of the manuscript. In this case, the authenticity of this correction is unquestionable.

b. 31-35

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

3 slurs in A, contextual interpretation

4 slurs in GE1 (→FEEE)

3 slurs in GE2

..

The slurring of A is inaccurate at the transition between the pages: the slur at the end of the page (bar 32) suggests a continuation, yet there is not any ending on a new page (bar 33). To make matters worse, the next slur, beginning from the syncopated b1 note, is written with great flourish, which probably convinced the engraver of GE1 (→FEEE) that the division of the slur appears here on the bar line. Nevertheless, there is no excuse for distortions of phrasing in bars 31-32 and 33-34. As a whole, the fragment is one of the most striking examples of misunderstanding and disregard of the Chopin slurring by the engraver of GE1. It is worth adding that the last slur was led to the end of the phrase in bar 35 only in the proofreading: initially, bars 31-34 contained four one-bar slurs.

b. 40-41

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Slur to b in A (contextual interpretation→GE)

Slur to b1 in A (literal reading) & FE (→EE)

..

Bar 40 is the last one on the page in A, and, in spite of the fact that the slur suggests continuation in the next bar, there is no ending on a new page. In GE1, a slur was initially printed to the end of bar 40 and a new one from the beginning of bar 41 to the end of bar 44. The slurs were then corrected to the version written in A (probably at Chopin's request). FE (→EE) included the corrected version of the beginning of the slur in bar 41, but not of the ending of the slur from bar 40, which could mean that the correction was introduced in the last phase of proofreading of GE1.
