b. 699-702

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Separate slurs in A (→FC→#Wn1, →FEEE) & #Wn3

Continuous slur in GE2

..

The continuous slur in GE2 is an arbitrary, baseless revision. The original slurring was restored in GE3.

b. 703-704

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Separate slurs in A (contextual interpretation→FC) & GE3

Continuous slur in A (possible interpretation→FEEE) & GE1 (→GE2)

..

It is not entirely clear in A whether the slur in b. 704, which opens a new line, is to be considered a continuation of the preceding one, as it was understood in FE (→EE), or the beginning of a new one, as it was most probably reproduced by Fontana – in FC the slur at the end of b. 703 does not suggest a continuation. Therefore, the continuous slur of GE1 (→GE2) must be considered an inaccuracy, corrected in GE3.

b. 722-723

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur in bar 723 in A (→FCGE1, →FEEE)

Slur in bars 722-723 in GE2 (→GE3)

..

The L.H. slur in A encompasses b. 723 only, hence it is compliant with the R.H. slur yet shorter than the slurs over the analogous motifs in b. 718-719, 758-759 and 762-763. It gives rise to the suspicion that the notation is inaccurate, hence the version of GE2 (→GE3) may be considered an acceptable variant. According to us, performing the D-E crotchets non legato may be regarded as a positive diversification.

b. 725-731

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Dashes in A (→FC) & GE2 (→GE3)

No dashes in FE (→EE) & GE1

..

The missing dashes marking the range of cresc. are an inaccuracy of FE (→EE) and GE1. Omission of such dashes is a quite frequent discretion of Chopinesque first editions.

b. 730-731

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

 on 3rd beat in A (literal reading→FCGE1, →FEEE) & GE3

 on 2nd beat in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

..

In A the R.H. quavers in these bars are written later than the L.H. part notation indicates, which is one of the reasons hampering the interpretation of the pedalling markings. The  marks begin under the 1st R.H. quaver but they end already after the last L.H. crotchet, which the majority of the sources reproduced as a  mark on the 3rd beat of the bar. Such a pedalling unnecessarily – contrary to cresc. – impoverishes the sound, since, differently than in the previous bars, the first two quavers of each of the passages do not form the chord built with pedal. Therefore, in the main text we keep in these bars the pedalling model from the previous passages, which is pianistically natural and compliant with the notation of A. Such a solution was adopted in GE2, whereas GE3 restored the notation of FC (→GE1).
