Issues : Chopin's hesitations

b. 540

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No marking in A (→FCGE)

in FE (→EE)

(), our variant suggestion

..

Chopin initially wrote a  in FC and then deleted it, probably replacing it with an accent. However, in the proofreading of FE, which must have been performed later, he used that indication again. Since we generally draw the Scherzo's performance indications from FC, which is most carefully developed by Chopin in this regard, we do not include that  in the main text. However, taking into account the fact that Chopin would frequently use a combination of  and an accent, we consider it to be possible to add that indication (in a variant form) to the accents adopted in the main text.

b. 658

composition: Op. 11, Concerto in E minor, Mvt I

e & e1 in FE (→GE,EE)

e & e1 in FES

..

On the basis of the available sources, one cannot determine whether Chopin chose one version of the 1st note of bass, and if yes then which one. In FE (→GE,EE), there is an e-e1, left unchanged by Chopin in four out of five pupil's copies, including two that bear visible traces of this movement of the Concerto having been studied with Chopin (FED and FEH). However, in FEorch (→GEorch) cellos have an e1, and in FES, flats before the 1st chord are added, whose shape does not exclude Chopin's hand. Since both versions seem to be authentic, we choose to the main text the one that is presented by the principal source, i.e. FE.
