Issues : Long accents

b. 455-456

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

3 long accents in A

3 short accents in GE

2 short accents in FE (→EE)

..

The notation of the three subsequent accents is unambiguous in A – they are 3 long accents. In spite of this, GE reproduced them as short accents, whereas in FE (→EE) the third of them was overlooked.

b. 456

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt III

Short accent in A & GE2

Long accent in GE1

 in FE (→EE)

..

The short accent in A was reproduced in GE1 as a long one, since the engravers were probably convinced that they were a diminuendo hairpin. This is how it was interpreted in FE (→EE), extending the mark to the end of the triplet, "for clarity." The form of the sign compliant with A was restored in GE2.

b. 462

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Long accent in A

Short accent in FC (→GE)

..

The shape of the accent in A suggests that it is a long accent. It is even more evident in similar b. 470. In FC (→GE) both marks were reproduced as common short accents. Taking into account the fact how carefully Chopin reviewed FC, the absence of corrections in those and similar places may mean that Chopin did not always consider the type of accent used to be a priority. We consider the version with a short accent featured in the principal source to be an acceptable variant.

Short accents, our alternative suggestion

..

It is uncertain which kind of accents Chopin meant in bars 463 and 465, since two accents in bar 463 are long, whereas the one in bar 465 – short. As there is no reason to differentiate between the indications, we suggest unifying the marks and choose long accents for the main text. (We also suggest adding an accent at the beginning of bar 465.)

In the main text, we suggest adding long accents after analogous bars 460-461 and 456-457 and 464-465. Accents (short) were added already in EE as well as in GE3.
