Issues : Inaccuracies in A

b. 12

composition: Op. 28 No. 8, Prelude in F♯ minor

..

In A (→FC,FE) there is no  lowering e to e in the last L.H. figure. The patent inaccuracy was corrected in GE and EE.

No sign in FC (→GE), AB, ACh & CGS

  in EE

..

The position of the  mark is not strictly determined in A due to the missing musical text in the abridged marking of this bar. We assume the only reasonable solution, adopted in FE (→EE). The mark was omitted in the remaining autographs and overlooked by the copyists. EE arbitrarily added a  asterisk at the end of b. 13, almost certainly against the intention of Chopin – cf. the note to the Prelude No. 7 in A Major, b. 16.

b. 12

composition: Op. 28 No. 18, Prelude in F minor

..

In A (→FC,FE1) there are no accidentals before the last semiquaver (in both hands), which, when interpreted literally, gives d1 and d. In FE2 was added, yet only in the R.H., where it is a cautionary accidental. GE and EE include naturals in both hands.

b. 13

composition: Op. 25 No 4, Etude in A minor

..

FE has an erroneous instead of as the 3rd quaver. This patent error could have been provoked by an inaccurate placement of this note in A. The mistake was corrected – perhaps by Chopin – in FED.

b. 13-17

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

2 staccato dots in A (→FEEE)

1 staccato dot in GE1

3 staccato dots in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

..

In A Chopin most probably introduced a staccato dot for the 1st quaver in the L.H. in bar 13 and certainly in bar 17. Both signs were included in FE. As bar 15 is generally a repetition of bar 13, the absence of the dot in the analogous place can be considered Chopin's oversight. In turn, as a result of an unquestionable oversight of the engraver, in GE1 there is no dot in bar 17 – the sign was already in FE. To the main text we adopt the complete articulation of GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5).
