Slur in GE

..

The missing slur in PE is one of a few defects in this fragment of the Waltz (see bar 115). In the main text we add a slur, as it was performed in GE.

In PE this bar opens a new page. In the L.H. part the previous bar ends in the treble clef, yet in the discussed bar at the beginning of the line there is a bass clef in PE1, followed immediately by a treble clef. This unnecessary complication resulted from a bass clef having been placed by mistake at the end of bar 123, which was then removed, still in PE1 (one can see traces of this mark). In PE2 this version was simplified by placing a treble clef right at the beginning of the bar. In GE, in which – as in our transcriptions – both bars fall in one line, no clefs are necessary here. While performing the correction in PE2 the arpeggio mark before the L.H. chord was removed by mistake.

No sign in PE2 (→PE3PE4)

..

The missing arpeggio in PE2 (→PE3PE4) is a side effect of ordering the notation of clefs at the beginning of this bar, which in PE opens a new page of text (see the note above).

No marking in PE1 (→GE)

 in PE2 (→PE3PE4)

..

The  indication was added in PE2 (→PE3PE4) probably as a correction of the oversight by the engraver of PE1 (→GE). According to us, however, it is more likely that the indication entered into [A] was , and not :

  • Chopin would use  only in exceptional cases,
  • publishers had problems with deciphering  as a less popular form of this indication (on a number of occasions, it was replaced with , while in the Variations in B, Op. 12 an uncommon zf abbreviation was used a few times).

Wedges in PE2 (→PE3PE4)

..

The wedges for the 1st crotchet were most probably overlooked by PE1 (→GE), which was rectified by adding them in PE2 (→PE3PE4). Cf. the note on / below.
