b. 149

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

In AsI there are no accidentals before the last two demisemiquavers in the bar. This time, Chopin's patent oversight – cf. analogous b. 137, 141 and 145 – remained unnoticed also in A (→GEFESB,EE1EE2). It was only FE and EE3 that added flats restoring b and b1.

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

In A (→GE1GE2,FE,EE) Chopin overlooked the  raising e1 to e1 in the alternative accompaniment chord, despite it being present in AsI. The accidental was then added only in FESB and GE3.

composition: Op. 2, Variations, complete

As in b. 149, in the manuscripts the accidentals restoring c(1) and B (b) at the end of the bar are missing. The mistake was corrected only in FE and yet only partly by adding flats to the last demisemiquaver.

e in chord in AsI, contextual interpretation

g in chord in A (→GEFE,EE,FESB)

..

The third (e) of the seventh chord present in AsI having been replaced with a g fifth seems to be the composer's mistake rather than an intended change. It is indicated by:

  • complete lack of the third of the chord on the 4th quaver in the bar in this version – performing the Variations solo,
  • e present in a respective chord in both analogous b. 138 and 146,
  • the presence of a third in the orchestral part, which, in this bar, is no different from both previous analogous places.

In this situation, in the main text we adopt the version of this chord written down in AsI, adding a  to that note, undoubtedly overlooked by inadvertence in this draft manuscript.
See also the note in the next bar.

f-a-e1-f1 in AsI, contextual interpretation

f-a-f1 in A (→GE1FE,EE,GE2FESB)

f-a-e1-f1 in GE3

..

The missing e1 note in the last chord of the alternative accompaniment most probably resulted from Chopin's oversight in A – cf. analogous b. 139 and 147 both in the version for one piano and in the orchestral part (e.g. in AsI). The note was added by GE3, and this is the version we give in the main text.
Interestingly, in the solo part of AsI Chopin did not finish writing this chord – he only wrote an f-a third and 3 ledger lines over the stave, which suggests a chord reaching at least g1. Therefore, unfortunately, this notation does not allow us to settle the doubt concerning the potential presence of e1.
