Slurs

b. 730-731

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

No slur in A (→FEEE)

Slur in FC (→GE)

..

In the main text we keep the slur of FC (→GE), yet it is uncertain whether it was added by Chopin. Anyway, the missing slur in A is probably just an oversight (of Chopin), so it seems justified to add that slur, even if it was added by Fontana.

b. 755-756

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Continuous slur in A (literal reading→FCGE, →FEEE)

Overlapping slurs in A, contextual interpretation

Separate slurs, our alternative suggestion

..

In A (→FC) b. 756 opens a new page, while the phrase marks, both in b. 755 and 756, suggest continuation. Therefore, it is no wonder that all editions combined them. On the other hand, the passage beginning in b. 756 is strictly opening (cf. its previous appearances in b. 49 and analog. and 716 and 720), so one can assume inaccuracy of notation, particularly in b. 756. Such phrase marks, written with a flourish, can be frequently encountered in Chopin's autographs, e.g. in b. 589 and 597, where their meaning is, however, unequivocal. Taking into account the above, we suggest two alternative solutions in which the phrase marks are not combined.

b. 756-757

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

..

In A Chopin deleted the slurs over the three-note motifs, beginning on the 2nd beat of b. 756, 757, 760 and 761. It could have been related to the addition of the indication marcato.

b. 758-759

composition: Op. 31, Scherzo in B♭ minor

Slur to bar 759 in A (→FCGE1)

Slur to end of bar 759 in FE (→EE)

Slur to end of bar 758 in GE2 (→GE3)

..

In the main text we give the unequivocal slurring of A (→FCGE1), confirmed by an identical notation in b. 762-763 as well as in b. 718-719. The fact of merging the slurs, which was performed in FE (→EE), is probably a result of mistaking the intersection of the slurs of A for their colligation. The separate slurs in GE2 (→GE3) are an arbitrary revision unifying the discussed slurs with the ones of FC (→GE) in b. 718-719 and 722-723. The same applies to b. 762-763.
