A includes separate slurs in bars 411 and 412, probably due to the crossed out fragments in bar 411. The fact that Chopin did not intend to divide the slur in this place is supported by the slurs in all three repetitions of this fragment (bars 419-421, 451-453 and 459-461). The ending of the slur in bar 412 is also inaccurate, since it suggests leading the slur to bar 413, yet it does not go beyond the bar line. A comparison of analogous bars enables us to interpret this detail correctly. The versions of GE1 and FE (→EE) follow from an inaccurate reproduction of the base texts. In GE2, the final fragment separated with a slur, corresponding to the figures in the previous bars, is completely arbitrary.

Slur to f2 in A, contextual interpretation

..

The slur of A does not go beyond bar 416; however, its shape does not exclude an interpretation in which the last note of the phrase is also encompassed with it. We adopt this interpretation to the main text due to the significant statistical predominance of pianistically natural slurs reaching the notes on which the triplet movement stops for a moment – see bars 409-419

Slurs in A (contextual interpretation) & GE2

Slurs in GE1 (→FEEE)

..

In A bar 420 is the last one on the page, whereas the slur written with a flourish clearly indicates continuation in the next bar. However, there is no ending of this slur in bar 421, which could have reassured the engraver of GE1 of his whole-bar approach (moreover, the traces of corrections visible in bars 420 and 421 suggest that each of these bars was initially encompassed with one slur; the erroneous division of the slur at the beginning of bar 421 was then corrected – perhaps by Chopin – to the version compliant with A). In GE2, Chopin's intention contained in A was reproduced correctly.

Slurs from d1 in A

Whole-bar slurs in GE (→FEEE)

..

The range of the four subsequent slurs in the L.H. in A may be problematic at the time of interpreting them – the lines are written with a flourish and they overlap with the  and  hairpins. The first slur is particularly inaccurate; in this case, it is both the beginning and ending that are questionable. However, a comparison of all four slurs allows us to state that the slurs always run from the dminim to the beginning of the next bar and this is the form in which we give them in the main text. The whole-bar slurs of the editions, although incompliant with A, could have been accepted by Chopin, since if we consider the authentic rhythmic values, accents and pedalling, the slurs can influence the performance to a minor extent. Similarly in bars 437-438.

2 slurs in EE

..

It is difficult to assume that Chopin actually wanted to end the slur before the 2nd beat in bar 466. The slur is probably unfinished, perhaps to avoid the crossing with the octave sign. The slur of GE (→FE), led further, was most probably corrected, probably by the very Chopin, which confirms our assumptions that the slur of A is inaccurate. In EE, each of these bars is encompassed with a separate slur, which can be explained by an inaccurate interpretation of FE or a revision, e.g. by analogy to bars 425-426.
