b. 12-14

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

No arpeggio signs in GC (→GE)

Arpeggio sign in bar 13 in FE (→EE)

Arpeggio signs suggested by the editors

The arpeggio given in FE (→EE) could have been overlooked in GC (→GE) or added in [A] already after GC had been prepared. According to us, the sign has a nature of a general indication, valid in all analogous places (bars 32-34, 200-202, 220-222 and 255-256).

b. 22-24

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt II

No signs in GC (→GE)

Arpeggio signs in bar 24 in FE

Arpeggio signs in EE

Although the arpeggios in the L.H. in bars 22 and 24 are written in the sources inaccurately, there is no doubt they are valid – the wavy lines in bars 2 and 4 are certainly to be considered to be an indication concerning all further repetitions of these chords. The signs added in EE in bar 22 could have come from Chopin, yet an editorial revision seems to be more likely here.

Chopin did not mark here the arpeggios for the tenth chords of the L.H. In spite of this fact, on the basis of a few signs appearing in analogous bars, we suggest an alternative notation with marked arpeggios.

In the majority of the sources the arpeggios of the tenth chords in the L.H. are not marked. In spite of this, on the basis of a few signs appearing in analogous bars, we suggest an alternative notation with marked arpeggios. In the case of bar 201 in FE it is almost certainly an oversight, as the bar was only marked in the base text to FE1 – [A] – as a repetition of bar 13, in which there is an arpeggio sign. In EE2 the arpeggio in bars 201-202 was most probably added on this ground.
