Inaccurate notation of GE

GE slur, contextual interpretation

Slur in FE (→EE)

..

In GE, the slur ending in bar 73 points clearly to a continuation but there is not any in bar 74, first in a new system (cf. bars 65-66). This very inaccuracy was most probably a reason for shortening the slur in FE (→EE).

No pedalling in GE

Pedalling in FE (→EE)

..

Pedal marks in these bars were added during the proofreading of FE (→EE), most probably by Chopin.

b. 75

composition: Op. 27 No 1, Nocturne in C# minor

in GE

in FE (→EE)

with suggested by the editors

..

The sign which occurs in GE was replaced by a in FE (→EE). This is probably a result of Chopin's proofreading, although both markings mean practically the same in that context. Chopin could have added in order to restore an ornament overlooked by the engraver.

In the main text we suggest supplementing relating to the upper note of the ornament. An unmarked use of a1 between a minim a1 in bar 74 and a quaver a1 in bar 75 seems unlikely.

Staccato dots in GE, EE3

No signs in FE (→EE1EE2)

..

The lack of staccato dots in FE (→EE1-EE2) is probably due to an oversight as in bar 71. EE3 supplemented the signs supposedly after the GE version and the markings in bars 67-68.
