b. 26

composition: Op. 25 No 6, Etude in G♯ minor

g (without ) in FC & FE

in GE1

g (with ) in EE & GE2 (→GE3)

..

Chopin did not introduce any accidental before the 3rd chord (which results from the compatibility of the version of FC and FE). Hence it is to be interpreted as g-b-f1. The version of GE1 with is undoubtedly erroneous – the reviser could have wanted to add a cautionary sign after the  lowering g1 to g1 at the beginning of the bar. In the same place, EE added a cautionary  (the sign could have been authentic, if it had already been in the base text to EE; however, an editorial revision is more likely). The mistake of GE1 was corrected in GE2 (→GE3), changing  before the bottom note for ; a cautionary  was also added before and another before e1 in the next chord.

b. 27

composition: Op. 25 No 6, Etude in G♯ minor

g-a1 in FC, FE, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

g-g1 in GE1

..

The patent error of GE1 could have been provoked by a slightly lower position of the head of this note in FC.

Slur in in FC, FE, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

No slur in GE1

..

Lack of slur is a patent error of GE1, corrected in GE2 (→GE3). In FE and EE the slur was placed under the notes, which was certainly an arbitrary decision of the engraver – in both editions the stems of the notes are directed upwards, while the slur was routinely moved to the side of note heads.

b. 29-30

composition: Op. 25 No 6, Etude in G♯ minor

..

In FE and EE1 (→EE2) there are no flats lowering b2 to b2 in bar 29 and b1 to b1 in bar 30. In FC the inaccuracy appears only in bar 29. GE and EE3 include the correct text.

b. 29-30

composition: Op. 25 No 6, Etude in G♯ minor

Shorter slur in FC (→GE1)

Longer slur in FE & GE2 (→GE3)

Two slurs in EE

..

Lack of ending of the slur in FC (→GE1) is probably an oversight of the copyist – in FC bar 29 is at the end of the line. The divided slur of EE may, however, mean that the slurring in the base text to this edition was unclear too. In the main text we give the undisputed slur of FE (same as in the previous, analogous phrase, the placement of the slur under the notes is certainly an arbitrary decision of the engraver).
