At the repetition of bars 41-44 the sources are not free from mistakes and inaccuracies – none of the editions consistently repeated the same interpretation of A. Cf. the note in these bars.

No tie in A (→FEGE1)

Tie in EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4)

..

In the main text we give the tie sustaining e1, added by Chopin while proofreading FE1 in analogous bars 43-44. The notation of A, in which almost the entire reprise of the Polonaise is marked as repetition of the first part, means that Chopin did not expect any changed between them. A similar addition was introduced in EE and GE2 (→GE3GE4).

4 slurs in EE & GE2 (→GE3GE4

Bar 153 is marked in A as repetition of bar 49. However, contrary to that bar, here FE did not complete the slurs in the 1st half of the bar, which has to be considered to be an oversight. GE1 added a slur in the R.H. only, the remaining editions – both. In bar 155 there is no slur in the L.H. in GE1, which is probably an oversight of the engraver.

A, literal reading

A (contextual interpretation) & GE

FE (→EE), contextual interpretation

..

In A we mark this bar in an abbreviated manner as repetition of bar 49, written with a mistake – see the commentary to this bar. The version of FE (→EE), in which the chords omitted at the end of the bar were – certainly ordered by Chopin – completed, includes another mistake in the form of superfluous G notes. As a result, the correct text of the 2nd half of the bar, resulting from the interpretation of A confirmed by Chopin proofreading of FE in bar 49, appears explicite only in GE.

The sources differ in the notation of the rest embracing the 4th and 5th quavers of the bar, which we do not include in the given variants. In the main text, we give the notation used by Chopin on a number of occasions in A (bars 1, 3 and 5).
