b. 18

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

 in A (→GC,FE,EE)

in GE

..

The shifted beginning of a  sign resulted most likely from a routine revision of GE, aligning the signs with rhythmical structures like beams or bars.

Slurs in A

One slur in GC (→GE), FE & EE

..

It is puzzling why all sources based on A have a continuous slur in the L.H. despite two clearly separate slurs in A itself. It is even more striking with an analogous situation taking place in bars 20 and 22 too.

b. 18-19

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

c2 tied in A (→FE,EE

e1 tied in GC (→GE

..

In GC (→GE) the tie was erroneously ascribed to e1 in the bottom voice, instead of c2. It is a characteristic, repeatedly occurring mistake resulting from Chopin's way of writing ties as a short arcs placed next to the second of two tied notes.

In GC (→GE) there is a superfluous  next to the b1 grace note in the R.H.

Slurs in A

Slur in GC (→GE), FE & EE

..

In all sources except for A, the slurs of the L.H. are not separated in these bars. Presumably, both the copyist and the engravers considered the gaps to be an inaccuracy of the slurs' links in A, especially that the slurs of the R.H. were actually extended in these places.
