b. 14-16

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

 in AI

- - cresc. e ritenuto in A

cresc. e ritenuto in FE (→EE,GE1GE1aGE2)

cresc.  ritenuto in GE3 (→GE4GE5)

..

In AI there is none of the indications written in A (→FEEE,GE1GE1aGE2) in these bars, yet there is a  sign in bar 16. The editions overlooked the dashes determining the range of the indications, which is a frequent mistake in the first editions of Chopin's works. In GE3 (→GE4GE5) there is no "e" conjunction before ritenuto in bar 16.

No marks in AIFE (→GE,EE)

Accents in A

..

The missing accents over the 3rd semiquaver in these bars in FE (→GE,EE) could have been considered as a mistake, if it was not for the fact that in bar 14 there are visible traces of deleting an accent in FE. Taking into account numerous corrections of dynamic markings and accents in the first part of the Etude, in the main text we do not consider the accents of A.

Triad in AI

Sixth in A (→FEGE,EE)

..

The c2 note in the version of AI may be a remnant of a still earlier version of bars 14-15, written, yet deleted in the main course of notation: . It is generally the same melodic idea, underpinning the subsequent Etude.
