Issues : Errors in EE

b. 38-40

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

No marks in CLI & EE2 (→EE3)

Long accents in FE (→GE1)

Short accents in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) & EE4

..

The accents in bars 38 and 40 in FE (→GE1) have a form suggesting the use of long accents by Chopin. In EE2 (→EE3) the signs were omitted. In the remaining editions common short accents were given.

composition: Op. 10 No 1, Etude in C major

Rests in CLI & GE (except GE3)

No rests in FE (→EE2EE3)

Rests in GE3 & EE4

Our variant suggestion

..

The sources differ when it comes to the notation of rests at the end of these bars. The natural notation of CLI, in which the part of the R.H. ends with a rest, however, was not repeated in FE (→EE2EE3). As it is not certain whether omitting the rests was done on purpose by Chopin, in the main text we propose rests in brackets as a variant solution. After all, the difference has a rather ideological than practical character. In the remaining editions the rests are present, which is most probably a result of revisers' actions. In EE4 and GE3 both rests are in bar 45, which is most probably a mistake.

b3 in CLI & EE

a3 in FE (→GE)

..

The b3 note on the last semiquaver in CLI is probably the original version of this place. The same note in EE may be a result of the editorial edition. However, in both cases errors cannot be entirely excluded. Cf. bar 5.

Long accents in FE

Short accents in GE & EE3 (→EE4)

..

Two accents in the 2nd half of the bar have the form of long accents in FE, which we adopt to the main text. GE and EE3 (→EE4) have short accents (in EE2 the signs were omitted).

E-e in CLI

E1-E in FE (→GE) & EE3 (→EE4

E1-E in EE2

..

The version of CLI is definitely original. In the main text we give the more subtle version of FE (→GE,EE; in EE2 without the tie sustaining E).
