Fingering

b. 1-8

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

Fingering in Ap

Fingering in FE (→GE,EE

..

In Ap the fingering includes 4 digits at the beginning of bar 1 (in the entire Etude Chopin wrote only 20 digits, mainly the same as in the printed version). In the main text we give detailed fingering added by Chopin in a proofreading of FE (→GE,EE). We discuss a few situations requiring a commentary in separate entries (bars 1, 4, 5).

b. 1

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

No fingering in Ap & FE (→EE)

1-2 in GE

..

The additional fingering, present only in GE, is probably an addition of the reviser, although, being undoubtedly correct, it could have been written by Chopin. Whoever completed it, he probably realised that only the a1-dfourth is the first two-note chord, in which there is a real possibility of using other fingers than 1-2.

b. 4

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

No fingering in Ap

Fingering in FEcor

FE (→GE1GE2, →EE

..

We give the alternative fingering on the basis of Chopin's entry in FEcor. In finished FE (→GE1GE2,EE) those three digits were mistakenly put one semiquaver earlier. Repetition of the same error in EE is of particular surprise, as the fingering was revised and added by Fontana (cf. bar 12). Revisers of GE3, GE4 and GE5 tried to respectively simplify the fingering's notation and to make it more precise in this place; however, none of them realised the essence of the mistake.

Additional fingering in EE

..

In EE Fontana added here the fingering which was the literal repetition of Chopin's indication for the upper voice in bars 1-2.

b. 9-14

composition: Op. 10 No 2, Etude in A minor

No fingering in Ap

One numeral in FE (→GE

99 numerals in EE

..

These bars, being a repetition of bars 1-6, were not provided with fingering by Chopin (except for the '4' digit at the beginning of bar 9). In EE Fontana copied here the fingering given in FE at the beginning of the Etude. In bar 12 the alternative misplaced fingering from the beginning of the bar was even repeated.
