The sources differ in the number of octaves written in an abbreviated form with the use of 8: three in CLI, the 2nd and 3rd in Ap, 3rd in FE. Both in GE and EE the use of abbreviations was totally rejected.

Our variant suggestion

The line written by Chopin in FEcor was probably supposed to designate . It is indicated by the use of exactly this mark in Ap, whose performance markings in the last section of the Etude show a significant concordance with FEcor. However, it is unclear whether Chopin did not finish the mark, as he wanted to waive it, or whether it is a result of distraction (and, e.g., a temporary lack of ink). Therefore, in the main text we suggest a variant solution. The editions do not give this mark. The version of Ap is compatible with the markings of the published version, as far as the substance is concerned (apart from a possibly intentional omission of the  mark in bar 45 in FE).

The version of CLI seems to be the earliest shaping stage of the part of the L.H. in the ending of the Etude. However, it cannot be excluded that the notation is incomplete (lack of ties) or erroneous (one-voice notation of bar 47). After considering all possible mistakes and oversights, the version of CLI does not differ from the version of Ap. In any case, Chopin waived dividing the octave in bar 47 already in the base text for FE, which we consider as the final decision.
