b. 609-616

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Slur in EE

Slurs in GC, contextual interpretation

Literal reading of slurs in GC (→GE)

No slurs in FE

..

In the main text we present the GC slurring as the most precise one. Both EE and FE most probably copy the earlier stages of slurring these bars. The GE slur represents the literal reading of slightly imprecise notation of GC at the transition to a new line (bars 580-581)

b. 617-620

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

No markings in EE

Pedalling in GC (→GE) & FE

..

Pedalling marked  in b. 617 and  in b. 620 as seen in GC (→GE) and FE most certainly repeat here Chopin's ultimate intention.

b. 617

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Short accent in EE & GC (→GE)

Long accent in FE

..

In the main text we present a short accent based on GC (→GE). In EE the mark is placed below the note, which most probably does not correspond with the manuscript. In FE the accent is long and it is uncertain whether it applies to RH only.

b. 619

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

Short accent in EE & GC (→GE)

Long accent in FE

..

For the main text we adopt the FE long accent. Chopin many times emphasised a falling minor semitone motif, e.g. in Polonaise E, Op. 22, b. 119

b. 620

composition: Op. 39, Scherzo in C♯ minor

..

The GC slur extends over to the rest on the second beat of the bar. This was characteristic of a freestyle writing of slurs by Gutmann (and also quite often by Chopin).
