The diminuendo hairpin in bar 1 (of the same range) appears only in FEF and GEF, and it must have been added by Fontana.

In two autographs, AO and AK, Chopin wrote an abbreviated tempo marking, Allto, which we expand - Allegretto.

The tempo and metronome markings in FEF and GEF are certainly inauthentic. In the editions, the metronome is written on the left-hand side next to the first great stave. Following the contemporary convention, we place it next to the tempo marking. The tempo marking is followed by a dot in both sources; in GEF, a dot is present also after the metronome marking - we do not take them into consideration in the edition.

The repetition of the whole Waltz is marked in #CF and PE (segno, two codas at the end of the piece) and written out with notes in FEF and GEF. Both the repetition and the link between bar 52 and bar 1 bear marks of authenticity:

  • initially, the form of the Waltz in A minor, Op. 34 No. 2 was similar;
  • a harmonic link analogous to the link between bars 52 and bar 1 appears in Chopin's pieces on a number of occasions, e.g. in the Waltz in A major, WN 28.

In order to facilitate a transparent comparison of all sources, we change the written-out repetition in FEF and GEF to the version with segno and two codas (like in #CF and PE).

In the variants of phrase marks, we take into account only the ones coming from Chopin's autographs and copies of autographs.

The phrase marks in FEF and GEF are short; generally, they do not span more than one bar. Their authenticity is questionable - they must be Fontana's revision. In rare cases when a phrase mark of FEF and GEF overlaps with the phrase marks of the autograph/copies, we record this fact next to the relevant variant-miniature.

#CF (on the preserved page) and PE do not feature phrase marks.

Four out of five known autographs include dedications. In AO, the dedication was placed under the last staff, on the right-hand side. The remaining dedications are written in the top right corner of the page, over the staff. In AE and AG, Chopin applied abbreviations, which we explain respectively:
- in AEA Mme la Csse Eszterhazy = A Madame la Comtesse Eszterhazy,
- in AGA Mlle Elise Gavard = A Mademoiselle Elise Gavard
