Issues : Uncertain notes on ledger lines

b. 76-77

composition: Op. 10 No 10, Etude in A♭ major

FE (→EE), literal reading

FE (→EE), suggested interpretation

..

The main text includes the most natural version of A in terms of sound and pianistics. However, the exceptionally thick, spreading traces of the quill's strokes hinder the reading of A in this place, so the version of FE (→EE) differs significantly from the text of A. One's attention is drawn to the absence of stems extending some of the sounds (which can be however easily explained with an oversight) and the ambiguity related to it, as far as the meaning of the tie combining the last a in bar 76 with a relevant semibreve in bar 77 is concerned (in GE both the slur and the semibreve were omitted, which can be a mistake or a revision). The c1 note on the penultimate quaver also raises doubts – the engraver of FE (→GE,EE) could have discerned it on a thick and slightly bulging ledger line, used to write the a note. This version, even if it was not created as a result of Chopin's proofreading intervention, however, could have been accepted by him at the time of going over FE

b. 109

composition: Op. 21, Concerto in F minor, Mvt I

No c1 in chord in A & FE (→EE1)

Chord with c1 in GE & EE2 (→EE3)

..

GE has an additional note, c1, in the crotchet chord. The notation of A may be misleading here, yet Chopin's having deleted the note in the proofreading of FE (→EE1) is decisive. In EE2 (→EE3) the note was added under the influence of GE1.

b. 111

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

c1 in chord in FC (→GE) & EE

No c1 in FE

..

Lack of the cnote in the 2nd chord is most probably an oversight of the engraver of FE.

b. 112

composition: Op. 38, Ballade in F major

a2 in A (→FE)

No a2 in GC (→GE) & EE

..

In A the a2 note in the last chord in the R.H. is written so unclearly that it was overlooked both in GC (→GE) and EE.

b. 127-128

composition: Op. 24 No. 4, Mazurka in B♭ minor

A probable reading of A (→GE)

A possible reading of  A

FE (→EE1EE2)

..

A (→GE) has triads as the 2nd and the 3rd crotchets of those bars, although in the first triad in bar 127 the note c1 is practically invisible in the manuscript. When proofing FE, Chopin removed the middle notes of the triads leaving only the sixths. That corrected version was repeated in EE1 (→EE2). EE3 returned to the version of GE1 with the full triads (the omitted note b flat on the 2nd beat of bar 128 must be a mistake).
