Issues : Omitted correction of an analogous place

b. 31

composition: Op. 25 No 2, Etude in F minor

No pedalling in the sources

Our variant suggestion

..

In the main text we suggest to complete the pedalling after a possible Chopin proofreading of FE in analogous bar 12.

b. 31

composition: Op. 25 No 3, Etude in F major

No markings in GC (→GE) & FE

Pedal change in EE

..

Similarly as in bar 24, one group of sources (EE) has a pedal change here, omitted in other sources. Most probably, it is the original version, overlooked by Chopin at the time of introducing corrections.

b. 32

composition: Op. 26 No 1, Polonaise in C♯ minor

Quaver in A (→FEGE1,EE)

Crotchet in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5)

..

In analogous bar 7, in the proofreading of FE1 Chopin added a crotchet stem for g in the L.H. The absence of a similar correction in bar 32 is to be considered to be Chopin's oversight. The crotchet in GE2 (→GE3GE4GE5) is most probably a result of a revision and comparison with analogous bar 7.

b. 33

composition: Op. 10 No 3, Etude in E major

c2-e2 in AI, A & GE

b1-c2 in FE (→EE)

..

The c2-e2 third in AI and A is the original version, most probably left by inattention – the traces of similar corrections, e.g. on the 5th semiquaver of the previous bar, are visible both in AI and A. Chopin changed it in the last proofreading of FE (→EE), not included in GE.

b. 36

composition: Op. 35, Sonata in B♭ minor, Mvt III

 in Amar, GC (→GE)

No ornament in FE

 in EE

..

Each of the source versions could have been intended by Chopin, yet only the authenticity of the version with mordent is unquestionable. On the other hand, the notation with the use of grace notes, present certainly in analogous bar 52, is clearly later. Taking the above into account, in the main text we suggest an ornament in the form of grace notes.
