b. 1

composition: Op. 25 No 11, Etude in A minor

in GC, EE & GE2 (→GE3)

in FE & GE1

..

The use of the  time signature surprises only in GE1, as in FE the  indication was not used in the Etudes – contrary to the manuscripts – at all, both in Op. 25 and in Op. 10 and the Etude in F minor, Dbop. 36 No. 1 (cf. also the Impromptu in A major, Op. 29). In any case, the correctness and authenticity of the  time signature is undeniable towards the compatible version of GC and EE. The correct time signature was returned in GE2 (→GE3).

composition: Op. 25 No 5, Etude in E minor

..

In the indication of the metronome tempo GE1 includes an erroneous number 148 (the value is absent on a traditional metronome). The mistake was corrected in GE2 (→GE3).

No marking in FE (→EE) & GE1

..

The absence of  in FE (→EE) must be considered an inaccuracy of notation. Most likely, it is a non-corrected oversight of the engraver, although one cannot entirely exclude the possibility that the sign was added by Chopin in GC. In turn, no  in GE1 is a patent oversight. See also bars 5 and 18-19.

composition: Op. 64 No 2, Waltz in C♯ minor

 in A

 in FE (→EE,GE1no2,GE1opGE2opGE3op)

 in GE2no2

..

Shifting the  hairpin so that it starts from an upbeat, is, according to us, rather an inaccuracy of the engraver of FE, hence, in the main text we give the undoubtedly authentic sign of A. However, since an alternative possibility of Chopin's proofreading in FE cannot be entirely excluded, the version of FE, repeated in all remaining editions except for GE2no2, can be considered to be a potentially authentic variant. In turn, shortening the sign in GE2no2 is undoubtedly a revision, as a part of which the  signs in all analogous bars were unified (bars 1-2, 5-617-18 and 21-22).
